Today, the 2nd of February 2021, is an emotional day for the health sector as the Ministry of Health bids farewell to Dasho (Dr.) Ugen Dophu after a fulfilling 32 years and 5 months of service to the Tsa-Wa- Sum. Dasho has successfully ended his five-year long tenure as the Secretary of Health.

Dasho Dr. Ugen Dophu was appointed as the Hon’ble Secretary of the Health on 13th July 2016 by His Majesty the King. Prior to his appointment as Health Secretary, Dasho was the Director General of Medical Services. He started his career as a District Medical Officer in 1988 at Punakha Hospital and thereafter served in various posts in the health sector across the country.

Dasho completed his Masters in Public Health from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand in 2004. He also obtained a diploma in STD/AIDS from Prince of Songkla University, Thailand in 1999 and Diploma in Tropical Medicine from Karolinska Institute, Sweden back in 1992. He did his Bachelors of Science in Medicine & Surgery back in 1987 from Sir Sallimulah Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

As the Secretary of Health, Dasho had made tremendous contributions towards the strengthening of Bhutan’s health system. Some of the notable contributions are strengthening and expanding Bhutan’s health infrastructure with the inception and completion of major projects such as the Royal Centre for Disease Control, GJPMCH Phase I and 150-bedded Gelephu Regional Referral Hospital. Dasho also provided the much needed stewardship in streamlining Bhutan’s medical procurement system with the development and roll out of the eBMSIS system. In the area of preventive care, Dasho oversaw the design and implementation of various policies, strategies and guidelines. Overseeing major donor coordination works as the Chairperson of different donor coordination committees, Dasho is also a champion in mobilising critical resources for the implementation of the health sector’s projects and programs.

Dasho is a firm believer in the miracles of preventive and promotive healthcare care, and a very strong advocate of it. Dasho is known to be a man of high integrity and strong moral values. From a spiritual perspective, he believes that working hard with utmost integrity, honesty and diligence in the health sector is equivalent to practicing Dharma as it eventually helps lift people out of miseries due to ill health and diseases, and restores strength and well being, and therefore happiness.

The modest farewell ceremony at the Ministry of Health today was graced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and the Health Minister along with senior officials and members of the MOH fraternity and allied health agencies.We wish Dasho a very happy retirement as you pave your path towards a new chapter in your life.
