Under the patronage of Her Majesty, the Royal Grandmother, Gyalyum Kesang Choeden Wangchuck, the Ministry of Health today launched the HPV vaccination for boys. This initiative is in continuation to the introduction of nationwide HPV vaccination campaign for girls between 12 -18 years in 2010.
The HPV vaccine for boys will provide additional benefit in terms of protecting males and their partners against HPV related diseases and will greatly help reduce the circulation of HPV related cancers (anogenital cancer, genital warts, penile cancer and cancers of the head and neck). The launch of the vaccine for boys is one of the key interventions which will help MOH realize its goal of eliminating cervical cancer in the country.
Under the farsighted and caring leadership of Sowai Lyonpo, Bhutan tabled the global agenda on elimination of cervical cancer during the 144th session of the Executive Board Meeting of the World Health Assembly in January, 2019 which was well applauded and warmly received by the member states.
The vaccine which was launched today will be given to:
- All class six boys in the schools
- All 12 yrs old boys out of school
- 11-14 years old monks (For 2020 cohort only)
The second dose of the vaccine will be given to the same cohort in May 2021 and the school based HPV vaccination for boys will be integrated along with the girls from 2021 academic year with the quadri-valent HPV vaccine.
