Led by Her Excellency, a team from MOH participated in the Health Ministers Meeting on UHC in Asia and the Pacific which is being jointly organized by the Asian Development Bank and World Health Organisation.

In her remarks, Lyonpo Dechen Wangmo outlined that Bhutan’s response to the pandemic has been primarily guided by the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bhutan which mandates the state to provide free basic public health services to its people at all times.

Furthermore, Her Excellency highlighted that the brave and selfless leadership of His Majesty the King was instrumental in ensuring a sound national response to the pandemic.

Lyonpo further stated that within this conducive leadership and legislative ambiance, Bhutan has not only managed to score a highly effective response against the pandemic but also managed to ensure that other essential health services such as immunization, medical care for those with chronic illnesses, cervical cancer screening programs and vital MCH services were operated in a fluid and uninterrupted manner.

Upon apprising the forum on Bhutan’s experiences with UHC and COVID-19, Her Excellency reemphasized the need for a humanitarian corridor during global emergencies as she has done in many other global and regional forums. Her Excellency also emphasized on the need for global solidarity in access to COVID-19 vaccines once they are available.
